The Blog
Note: This blog was most rudely hacked with what I am told was brutal force. Bring me my smelling salts! I am still restoring it one blog entry at a time. When it is complete, I’ll remove this notice. Until then, forgive the bit of dust!
A writer’s studio. What a stunning image. I love impressionism and the colours in this are so saturated and glorious! Some writers say that windows and views distract them. In my case they help create a creative ambiance and are less likely to distract me from writing than many other things. Of course this sunset or sunrise? Would distract in the very best way. I have described sunrises and sunsets in my books and sometimes the words seem to describe something ridiculously exaggerated. The wonderful part of fiction is that the words get...
read moreI’m proud to be a backer of an exciting new Kickstarter for a fantasy short story anthology Unlocking the Magic. I also hope to be a contributor; I’ll be submitting a story myself, hoping to join fabulous editor Vivian Caethe and writers like Cat Rambo, Jody Lynn Nye, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Ferret Steinmetz, and Kristi Helvig. And by the way, kudos to Holly Heisey for the fabulous art! For those interested, there will be an open submission period so pledge and/or follow the kickstarter to get notified when it’s open....
read moreI’m not the guest of honor, though. Brace yourself for the guest of honor. Yes, Scott Westerfeld. That Scott Westerfeld. Scott. Freaking. Westerfeld. He is known for so many fabulous series. Uglies was the first I read. It was one of those rare-for-me instances of getting caught up in a contemporary science fiction fantasy instead of something historical. Uglies is yet another YA post-apocalyptic dystopian series, but what a hella twist. Everyone gets extreme surgery at age 16 to make them Pretties. Perfect body, perfect face....
read more“Warm sun and robin’s-egg skies were inappropriate conditions for sending one’s uncle to a lunatic asylum.” This year is turning out to be stellar. I keep discovering fabulous books to read or listen to, but I have neglected to share the goodies. So, let’s begin to catch up. The book I need to share with you first? The Dark Unwinding, by Sharon Cameron Not only has Sharon Cameron provided us with a fabulous world and characters, but Fiona Hardingham has brought the characters to life. I love the...
read moreI read the script for Miss Potter, written by Richard Maltby, Jr., a few years ago* and fell in love. And the movie more than fulfilled the promise of the script. There are many reasons to see this film. If you love Peter Rabbit, get thee to a theatre quickly. If you love the stunning scenery of the Lake District in England, get thee to a theatre quickly. Click through for a wonderful video about the Lake District. If you love tender love stories of repressed English people, get thee to a theatre quickly. (If you are trying to imagine Renee...
read moreThe reviews on The Dead Shall Live are fabulous. If you haven’t posted yours, please do. goodreads amazon The image above of Adrian Von Ziegler is a hint of what is coming. Just a hint! Adrian may look [and sound] familiar to you, though! First I want to give you a sneak preview of the exciting behind the scenes work still happening on The Dead Shall Live. At least, it’s exciting to me! The trade paperback edition is available now, and…drumroll, please!… the hardcover will be available very soon! [Yes it...
read moreWhen Chrysoula Tzavaelas told me she wanted to created fanart for the Fury Triad, I was beside myself. There is no greater compliment or gift than someone who wants to creat fanart or write fanfic about your world. But what she did with Bardan Fury-Persephone’s ancestor who is revered in Magi society–went beyond any expectations. In his medieval study surrounded by things both scientific and occult, he stares out at us and–is there just a hint of Darkness there? And amusement? After all, it was in response to his actions...
read moreA few years ago I was at the Pulpwood Queens Girlfriends Weekend to see Pat Conroy, who loved the Pulpwood Queens and visited them whenever he could, may he RIP. It’s a rollicking good time where [mostly] women celebrate their love of reading and books. It inspired one of his last books, My Reading Life. He returned to launch the book at Girlfriends Weekend a year or two later. This year’s theme is Bohemian Rhapsody! Oh, to be there. Alas, my writing schedule keeps me in my back yard office with very rare exceptions [watch for...
